2008 Novice CC Champs

2008 ANSW Novice cross country race -

P S Good

After a wet and windy week the weather god was kind and put on a beautiful day for the annual winter season opener. Following the previous years trend big fields assembled for all races. Even the fun runs on the day produced good fields as evidenced by the 4km fun run where 138 finished with the slowest time being 32min.40

The women’s open 4km (95 finished, slowest time 29min .04 sec.) produced great runs from Jacquelyn Wright and Deirdre Slattery. Both have been slowly returning from injury. Jacquelyn ran strong and consistently chalking up two fast laps for a great time. Deirdre set off conservatively and it all paid off with a fast finishing effort.

Team medals have been sparse over the last few years and this made the men’s race enthralling, as we had a good team assembled. Messrs Chamkaur Dhaliwal, Dave McAnally, Peter Trewin, Adam Paleg, Oska Booth, Alan Gardner, Paul McGuire were all battling for the top 4 spots.

Chamkaur’s battles with injury/surgery over the past few years are legendary and his performance today was to match. Through rain sodden fields and twisting tree lined bush paths he hammered away to commandingly finish first of the AE contingent.

Big Dave Mac ran strongly behind and put the team in with a great chance of medalling. Adam Paleg in his debut winter race (and running with baby lag, new addition only 2 months old) can be really proud of his performance as can Peter Trewin who sprinted home in such fine form that the local sprint squad want to sign him up.

This completed the first four over the line and their effort produced a second place teams medal, very impressive.

Oska Booth also a debut boy just failed to dip under the 40min mark, nevertheless it was a remarkable performance after a week of illness. Alan Gardner and Paul McGuire, two long-standing members, completed the AE involvement. Both had good runs although Paul believes he will be turning the tables at next weeks 10km road champs (bring it on).

Next race 10km road champs at Homebush, Saturday 3rd May 7.45am
