ANSW 10km Road Championships-Homebush
ANSW 10km Road Champs, Homebush – 3rd May 2008
Homebush 7.00am this really didn’t seem right, ANSW races are normally held in the afternoons and post AGM/Presentation night the snooze button was looming even though I was standing up! Fortunately a beautiful cool and sunny morning plus a great runner friendly course turned things around.
This was a new course for ANSW, two 5km loops on traffic free roads and the combination of fun run addition to the club champs race. With such a perfect morning and a larger field entertaining racing was the order of the day.
Female 10km
Fresh from receiving the clubs most prestigious award the previous night (most improved athlete of the year) Rona Macniven set off with sub 40 min. intent, at 5km she was well on track with 19.44. A premature finishing surge almost upset the plans however mental toughness prevailed and she achieved the planned goal.
Jackster Wright stepped up another gear on the comeback trail and posted a tidy 40.19 with negative splits – awesome.
AE welcomed Sally Lynch in her maiden run for the club. Although first runs create anxious moments Sally was a model performer, she produced a good result from a consistent effort and showed great potential.
Dierdre Slattery completed the team with a competent training effort as part of her road back to racing fitness with a 68 second negative split performance.
Male 10km
Dave Mac, Chamkaur and Adam ran as the big three for the first 5km, there was only 3 seconds splitting them and all looked great. The question was who would prevail during the second 5km? Track times would favour Chamkaur, Dave mac has the marathon strength if he chose to surge early, Adam, as a fairly new AE member that has vastly improved over the last 6 months was the unknown. Positions were still tight with 2.5 km to go when Big Dave surged forth to test Chamkaur. The result was as desired and the extra pace created a gap that separated them. A tight finish was to follow with season’s best times from Dave and Chamkaur, and a Personal best to Adam with his first ever sub 35 min performance.
Peter Trewin produced negative splits for a solid effort and seasons best with the fast improving Oskar following in a big seasons best time (2 mins faster)
Alan Gardner also did an Oskar hitting the big seasons best time (2 min. faster).
Paul “Speilberg” Mcguire completed the men’s team and after the Oscar (not Oskar) performance of the previous night still found the energy to get around without having to use the pause button.

2008 Annual Awards
Athletics East Annual Awards Winners
Annually Athletics East combines the AGM with an Award Presentation night. On this night trophies for outstanding performance and personal development are awarded to club members. AE is encouraged by the number of nominations for each award this year and applauds your effort and dedication. Congratulations to all winners we are proud to have you as members.
Most improved athlete of the year award
This award recognizes your effort/dedication and values your performance wherever you finish against the competition as you have achieved your personal best.
This is the clubs ultimate trophy and it encapsulates our total philosophy.
It is an award that can be won by ANY AE CLUB MEMBER; it is not based on ability. All athletes that have improved are in contention and all are winners in their own right.
The award can be won by an athlete recording numerous PB's (over the same distance/event or many distances/events) or a single but significant PB (i.e. a long standing PB as age makes it more difficult to achieve).
The award also recognizes the long climb back to fitness and performance after injury, illness or break from the sport.
All performances are reviewed individually with respect being given to single pb's as well as multiple improvements. This recognizes the different frequencies of competition that some events can tolerate. The marathon for example requires a very specialized approach and normally would only be contested once or twice a year.

Athletics NSW (ANSW) conducts a number of Cross Country, Road Races and Distance Relays each year. These events form the Winter Premiership Series.
Note: for more information refer ANSW racing article (Track and field does not have a point score at present).
The AE club point score is based on these races plus the annual AE club races (fun cross country and Tony Brown 10km). Total number of races is 10 and the number of AE participants and finishing order determines the point scoring. All participants receive a minimum of 1 point for any race completed.
At present there is a Fun runner point score on trial using similar principles with 8 fun runs and the annual club races. The ultimate intention is to be able to combine the results to produce one point score that works for all members.
Winner of the Tony Brown Memorial 10km:
Female Club 10km Road Champs - Gillian Sohun
Male Club 10km Road Champs - Peter trewin
